My best friend and I were in high school at the time. I think I was a junior and she was a senior? We were on our way home from the French Quarter and a little less than sober so we were taking the back roads to avoid cops.
Anyway, we were in her Celica and tried to jump the loading dock on ramp in the 9th ward. It was amazing… until we landed. So, it was probably 2:00-3:00 am and we were 2 white girls in the 9th ward with 2 flat tires... and only 1 spare. We are outside of car looking down at the tires and trying to figure out what to do and we saw a few locals come down off the porch and start walking toward us.
Now, my friends dad had given her a little pearl handled .22 when she got her car and my friend had pulled it out of the glovebox and put into her purse right before we got out the car. I guess she got a little too twitchy while they were approaching us and all of a sudden I heard a loud BANG! As I’m trying to army crawl under a Celica with 2 flat tires, I hear, “Dammit! That was my brand new Liz Claiborne purse!” Immediately following, I heard a bunch of voices screaming, “Ma’am, don’t shoot! Lady, don’t shoot!”
About that time, I crawl out from under the car and see 2 of the guys approaching with their hands in the air and asking if we need help changing the tire. I told them that would be great if we had 2 tires and showed them they busted back end. They walk away and my friend and I argue about who we could call and where we could find a phone when all of a sudden they come back… rolling a tire!
So they put on our spare and the tire they’d brought to us from somewhere. I remember it wasn’t perfect and there were some weird noises but we made it all the way home safely bc my white best friend from Chalmette scared the shite out of some 9th ward locals by shooting a hole through the bottom of her brand new Liz Claiborne purse with a pearl handled .22
They really were more afraid of us than we were of them.
