I haven't picked it up yet, but I thought I wasn't looking at DS4.
I got my 4090 in but not my WB yet, so not playing anything new until I can put in.

You don't have to pay to play online with most games. (I believe, I dont so much online play with consoles, I'm a PC master race)
But, ps plus is cheap and comes with free games every month.
I recommend it.

They don’t need PS+ for it but yes, the subscription is similar to Xbox live
