Yeah they pack it full of that gauze and leave it hanging out like a candle wick. Once or twice a day you pull out a small amount of gauze and cut it. Repeat until all packed gauze is gone.

I gotta bring mine in for 4x4 maintenance next week. I'm at 30k miles and it's recommended in my owner's manual.
Granted I've only used my 4x4 like 2 times though. Not looking forward to paying $400 for it, but part of owning a jeep I guess.
