I know people want to jump to the autism diagnosis but standing in one spot for 45 minutes sounds off, even for a kid on the spectrum. Typically, kids on the spectrum will flail a lot, walk around on their tip-toes, shake their hands a bunch, etc. etc. Something that keeps them moving. To stand still for 45 minutes is not something I have heard of in autism. I wonder about seizures of some kind, as well. Not all seizures involve shaking and losing total control of one's body. However, they say that when you have met one kid with autism then you have met one kid with autism. Maybe that is just how it manifests itself in this child. I wish you the best of luck but I would not accept this as "terrible two" behavior and would continue to get it checked out.

There is also a difference in fostering and adopting. Most adoptive familes have to foster first for this very reason -- to make sure they're prepared and the kid is going to fit in. This is even a requirement in most states.

By all means, go to your local DHR/CPS and sign up to be a foster parent. Until you do that, you have no right to judge.

Part of it could be that you are coming to the OT for any serious advice on anything

Relax. If a two year old didn't do these things, then I would be concerned.

By even fostering a child he and his family have done more than most even think of doing. Criticizing him shows such a lack of a grip on reality that I can't understand an actual adult having. I hope all works out for him.

We've taken in 8 kids over the years. And every situation, but one, was drug situations. We had 3 kids for 2 years until the mom finally got her life turned around. But of course, she got right back into it. It's not easy handing kids back, but we've had to in every situation but one. Our daughter we adopted. This is only our 2nd chance to adopt. Its not like we don't want it to happen. We hope for the best. But, if we get all bad news.....then we have big decisions to make.
Fostering is NOT easy, but at least there are people that take someone else's kids in and blow thousands of dollars.

And there are many hours of classes, background checks, fire inspection, many home inspections, taking kids to many Dr's appts, buying them everything, paying for sitters....etc
But yeah it's easy, and I'm a bad person

So, the doctors you've taken him to have no answers, except to do scans?

Just want to mention that I am also a nurse, with specialty in NICU, Well baby and pediatrics.

Has the pediatrician many any referrals to other specialists? Earlier I mentioned childhood onset schizophrenia, but it also sounds like the child may be having petit mal seizures as someone else mentioned. A friend's child had these for quite some time and he was just considered a bad boy and disciplined for not listening. He also had aggressive behavior.

I would think you should speak to someone at the agency that is involved in this child's case. You mentioned you were fostering and planned to adopt. It could be possible that they could help with referrals that are needed. If you haven't involved that agency, you should certainly do so to avoid future problems for yourself and your wife. I wish you and the child the best. Hoping things get better.

Adding: you mention that he tilts his head and stares into space for 45 minutes at a time. Have you or your wife tried to interact with him when this is happening? Have you tried making eye contact with him? What happens if you approach or touch him during that time? I would imagine if it were any type of seizure, he would not respond or acknowledge your presence. Thanks.

Our Dr's are always "get you out in 15 min" Dr's. They always just say, he has double ear infections and upper respiratory. They have never done tests, or made referrals. The agency does little. They stop by for 30 min once a month. But, as I said...it's gotten real bad this past month. It only happened once before where he acted odd. But he was sick when that happened. He's over his sickness this time and he's still real bad, if not getting worse. Today has been real bad

I understand all of the work and hoops you've had to jump through. Been there and did all of that years ago when we were trying to foster a child with intentions to adopt. Unfortunately I think the State did a type of bait and switch on us when the time came to meet the child. So sorry you are going through this.

Yes we try to interact and he won't move or budge or make a peep. If we try to move him, he goes ballistic

If you came to the OT for advice without the expectation of assholery...

I have a deep respect for foster parents. Kudos to you and your wife. I damn sure couldn't do it.

Definitely seek medical treatment for your son.

We have no choice but to go to a children's hospital and say he's having seizures so they will do tests on him. ER won't do nothing for him at our local hospital

You mentioned ear infections and tubes. My concern is the possibility of a deeper infection affecting the brain. As crazy as I am, I would take him to an ER and raise all kinds of hell!!! I'm assuming he is covered by a type of Medicaid for health care since he is in the foster care system. Sorry to say, bad roads or not, you need to take him to an ER. If you can't do it, call 911 to come get you and the child. This is very concerning to me.

To be fair, it's possible that he is having seizures if he's having periods where he's "blank". That's what absence seizures (also known as petit mal seizures) do and if he's having multiple seizures back to back that could cause what seems like a long period of "stillness" or "blankness".

Just woke up and saw this thread(worked last night).

I would agree with Isabelle's post. Get him referred to a pediatric neurologist. The staring off into space thing could be a form of seizures. Seizures are not always the jerking/flopping you see portrayed on tv. I've cared for children that would just stare off to the side in a daze...and that was actually a seizure.

It's already been mentioned by other posters, but if he's a fosterchild, possible he was exposed to drugs while bio mom was pregnant. You have to think there had to be some serious f'd up situations with the bio mom for her child to be legally taken away from her. With drug babies you just never know how the drug exposure will affect the child as they get older. They could have learning disabilities, behavior disorders, etc.

That poor child, I hope you are able to get some answers to determine exactly what is wrong.

Thank you guys for all your advice. I'm taking him tomorrow and mentioning the possible seizures, and tubes.
Would the tubes cause seizures?

We wanted to go today, but the really good children's hospital is an hour away on good roads. Don't want to risk our lives over something we can do tomorrow

Agree with LSU Nurse. Take him to the Children's Hospital and tell them two different nurses believe he may be having seizures. You don't have to say who the nurses are or where they are from. My guess is you will see some action.
