She just texted me this:

"If he didn't explain that one: It's a glass enclosed room in the middle of the ER where EVERYONE could see you and consult the hell out you. You learned not to linger there too long or you'd be stuck all night."

Cheers to y'all and aspiring docs everywhere.

Med School is still a good gig. You have a shite ton of schooling and work a lot but still make a good living.

Dental school is where it's at though

Oh and NO > Shreveport

My wife (gf at the time) went through the exact same thing 4 years ago. She ultimately chose S'port and has excelled. She is currently interviewing for residencies and will have her pick of top programs across the country. Her deciding factor was that she just felt more comfortable here and it had a smaller/closer knit program.
It kinda sucked for me though, took me almost 2 years to find a decent enough job up here that allowed me stay stop traveling for work after we got married.

We're both ready to get out of North Louisiana, looking forward to living in DC or the Carolinas for a few years..

My good buddy is in his first year @ LSU-S and appears to be enjoying himself up there. LSU-NO is no joke; congrats on the acceptance. I know a few very smart, outgoing individuals who weren't even considered.

This is highly subjective, and makes no difference when you are comparing these two schools. Pick the one you are most comfortable with, do well and finish AOA, score a high percentile rank on your step tests, and pick where you want to train. You are kidding yourself if you think picking NO over SHV is gonna get you places. Unless you are lower third or worse in the class you can just about train wherever you want in the specialty you indicated you plan to choose.

Outside of Louisiana, no one knows the difference.

I'll probably be at LSU Shreveport next year as well.

Are you currently an undergrad at LSU?

I like the hospital in Shreveport. I'm not sure what areas in NO that are better than here. Both are great schools. If you have any questions regarding LSUHSC-S, I can answer them.

This isn't true at all. I've never heard anyone hold one in higher regards than the other. At least not yet.

Either way OP, you'll get a good education. NOLA has bigger classes. I chose Shreveport to avoid the hassle of New Orleans.

Ok.

I would use our USMLE pass rates in comparison, but NO has 40+ more students than we do, so that affects the numbers.

As I said, both are good schools.

Can't remember which one it is, but one of the two makes you wear this goofy cap and gown at graduation. So don't go to that one. That picture will follow you around your entire residency.
Your co-residents will think you went to med school at Voldemort

One is not significantly better than the other. Just be in top half of your class and do well on step 1 and both schools will put you in a decent residency.

But of course NOLA>>>>>Shreveport so im not sure how its much of a decision

When did I say Shreveport was the better school?

Both are good schools.

Stop picking fights and go back to your dark room.

Real talk though: In the grand scheme of things as far as preparing you for a career in medicine and affording you opportunities for competitive residencies, the two schools are basically equal.

Choose the location with the lifestyle that fits you best or fits your current life situation best. do you have kids, a significant other employed in a field with particular needs/limits depending on the locale, a propensity for alcoholism? These are important considerations

a systems based curriculum

NOLA is actually moving to a systems based curriculum. I think you'd be the last traditional curriculum. Ya'll might be the first year in the new one though. I'm not sure. Regardless, one way vs the other has no bearing on board scores. So pick what works best for you, but there's no inherent advantage to either curriculum.

However, I feel like it would be a mistake to choose shreveport over new orleans given NO's superior facilities and new hospitals

The people that come through the new hospital aren't going to be better doctors than the ones who rotated through ILH, the Earl, or Charity. Nice facilities are cool, but they don't necessarily mean it's a better learning environment.

insight or advice

You liked Shreveport better. Take a second look at both, but go with what you like. There's nothing wrong with choosing Shreveport, despite what people may tell you. My brother is an LSUHSC-S grad, I'm of the NO variety. We both like our schools. We rarely joke about which school is better, but usually he jests about the New Orleans Big Screen TV Budget and its impact on medical education.

You'll be fine wherever you go. Go where you'd like.
