Vets, anybody get the new license yet? I got mine yesterday. It's free if you forfeit your current license and get the new one. You need to bring either your NGB-22 or DD214 and they will issue you a new one.

It has a flag on it that says "Veteran" and it has Veteran under my picture.

I have the old one that just says "veteran" under the picture. Someone told me sex offenders had the same thing it just said "sex offender" obviously.

I kind of wish I didn't have it on my license. The whole "thank you for your service" bit every time I buy a six pack at the grocery store is embarrassing and feels kind of pretentious. Do you find it useful ever to have veteran on your license?

Dumb question, but this doesn't include active duty right?

I brought them my basic training DD214 and that's the one they used to give me my license. So I think if you have any DD214 at all you can go get one. It's a risk though. You may get the 1 DMV employee who makes sure you have the correct time in service etc.

You didn't get a DD214 out of basic? All us army dudes did.

That's the first I've ever heard of that, dd214 is any type of separation form

ETA: thanks tigeralum for not making me feel I was going insane

Ok, yeah I guess you can't get one until you get out then. It's been a long arse time for me so I may not remember it correctly. It was 25 years ago.

I don't think I ever even renewed my license the entire 8 years I was in...

ETA - I think I may have gotten something in the mail once to fill out and they sent me a sticker to put on the back of my DL

I believe that's just active duty. I got shot down when I tried once.

I use it every time I go to the one in Hammond and I've never had a problem. That's really the only place I ever use it.

If they actually check its for active duty and disabled veterans. Most clerks don't care. There's usually a sign or piece of paper taped near the register that shows the acceptable ids to make it easy for the clerks. Same for Home Depot.

I've spent thousands of dollars at Lowes in the past few years... as long as they keep giving me the 10% I'm gonna keep taking it.
