there is a cut off though, i think its 15 years old or something like that, where they then go by whatever the bill of sale says or the value you tell them you bought it for.

If you purchased the vehicle the bill of sale is actually used as evidence to calculate the sales tax you are owed when you register the vehicle. The only out of this is if you create an llc is in state like Montana. But I think those states have cracked down on this.
Another thing is I think the bill of sale has to notarized. From what I recall.

Louisiana cuts the diff between the two.

Like bama is 2% and La is 4.5%. So you would have to pay Louisiana the extra 2.5% within 30 days of driving on the roads here.
