More than 20 government agencies, universities and electric utilities in Louisiana soon will be getting electric vehicle charging stations worth more than $1.7 million.

The Department of Environmental Quality is awarding grants to 26 entities for 82 charging stations, using money from the state’s $19.8 million share. The money comes from a settlement worth nearly $3 billion between the U.S. Justice Department and Volkswagen over violations of the Clean Air Act, The Times-Picayune/The New Orleans Advocate reported.

Volkswagen sold about 590,000 vehicles equipped with devices that worked against their air pollution control features, resulting in increased emissions of nitrogen oxide.

Almost $12 million of Louisiana’s share of the 2016 settlement was set aside to replace 351 diesel engine buses owned by 16 school boards. The new engines will reduce nitrogen oxide emissions and other pollutants such as sulphur dioxide, volatile organic compounds, and particulate matter.

Another $7.3 million was given to the state Department of Transportation and Development and the Department of Agriculture to replace old diesel equipment and vehicles.

The new grants are aimed at helping entities that either plan to buy or already have bought electric vehicles, by providing them with three different levels of charging stations:

— A Level 2 light-duty electric vehicle station which provides 240-cycle electricity that can charge vehicle batteries over several hours.

— A direct current fast charger, which can charge a vehicle in as little as 30 minutes.

— A paratransit charger station that’s designed to service multiple vehicles at once.

They are going to university parking lots (LSU, Southern, Southeastern, etc.).

Seems like the ideal place for them would be shopping centers near the major highways, so that you have dining and shopping opportunities on longer trips when your car has to stop and charge for 30 minutes or so.

If this is such a good, lucrative idea, why is the government the only group pushing it?

They aren't. There are already charging stations in Louisiana. Some installed by Tesla, some by 3rd parties.

At this point, I don't think many people are taking longer trips (more than can be achieved on a single charge) in an EV. Universities and cities are still the most ideal location for charging stations.

Because most people don't want to sit around waiting hours for their car to charge in the middle of a road trip. The charging technology just isnt quite there.

But that doesnt mean EVs arent useful as a commuter car for some people.

We only have 190 miles of road and have more EV's per capita than any other city or town. Nissan Leaf's are the primary EV here. I'm tempted to get an EV myself.

$1,700,000 / 82 = $20,732 each

The article is specifically about the installation of public charges at public universities using a grant from the VW emissions settlement.

There are already chargers funded by private enterprise in Louisiana. Those numbers will grow as more people adopt electric vehicles.

Sure. Until the state shuts off electricity. I know. Hypothetical scenario, but I'm sure it could happen.

Just got back from a beach vacation. The condo we were at had two charges stations installed and two Teslas using them while we were there. One had Texas tags.

No one wants to invest in the infrastructure until there are enough EV’s in the market.

No buyer wants to invest in an EV until there is enough infrastructure in the market.

This is what government investment is for. It’s why companies like Space-X and ULA now exist. They have 1960-2010 NASA to thank.

I said this a few weeks ago, invest in EV companies. Charge Point is a good company, keep an eye on Ford's stock because they are about to make EVs.

Yall might be against it, but its coming whether you like it or not. Might as well take advantage of it and invest in it.

Just because you don't know about it, doesn't mean it isn't there. The Tesla supercharger can net up to about 200 miles of charge in 15 minutes. They've placed them all over the country along the highways:

The technology is very much available, and the availability of these rapid chargers (both from Tesla and from other companies) is increasing every day. It's not in the most far flung rural areas yet, but it's definitely coming.

And the generation of EV's coming on line now are capable of even faster charges.
