Not LA but I’ve selected grand juries in MS. We literally take the first 25 people on the roster who aren’t seriously ill or a felon.

I was on the TN grand jury back in 2012.

If you’re picked, expect to show up from 8-12 M-Th for 3 months.

We heard just over 1000 cases.

I dreaded it at first, but I’d do it again in a heartbeat. My employer at the time UnitedHealth had good policies in place, so that helped make it easy.

It’s also a great way to get to know law enforcement higher ups.

I saw a woman during voir dire turn to the defendant and say "I understand you have rights to a fair trial. But the very fact that you're sitting there makes me think you're guilty of something." She was home for lunch. I was in that court room for 5 days as a juror.

I had like 5 summons in the 6 year period after registering to vote. I also failed to appear to any of the summons, entirely consequence free. So I am also curious as to what jury duty is like.

When I went, about half the names called were no shows. Technically they were in contempt of court. Practically, there's no way they can cite that many people.

And a lot of times, the summons aren’t properly served. They’re just mailed out. Which means the court can’t do anything to you for failure to appear Bc there’s no proof you were served.

I’ve been registered to vote since 1998 and have never gotten a summons. I’d like one.

I went through that about two years ago, thankfully I didn’t get picked. There will be about 50 people there and they select about 25 people. They spin and then pick a name out of the basket. You will have about a 50:50 shot at getting picked.

I got one about eight months ago. Only a handful were selected for the jury. Most of the people that went were dismissed. They just randomly select peoples names. I was selected as an alternate but never had to actually go in. It's not too bad, they work with your schedule if you're selected.
