Outside compressor blew out and leaked out all the freon. Rivercity 1 hour came and said it is better to replace everything because of the system age and the old refrigerant. They are coming back to give me a second opinion. Any other places that I should look to shop around. I used Accutemp before and they are professional but slightly pricey.

First guy that came to check my compressor thought it was dead. 2nd guy came and looked, noticed burnt wires. Replaced and the unit is GTG for the last 2 months.

If it's the compressor, its $1K+-to replace parts and labor. Only 1yr warranty. If the system is old, might be better to replace the entire unit.

How old and how many ton?

Shop around extensively. Prices vary wildly. I was quoted 12,000, $8000+ many times, $6500 from a knowledgeable guy in Hammond. Ended up going with an Amana 5 ton 14 seer total replacement inside and outside including heater for $4900 from Pro Services out of Abita. They did an excellent job. LINK

You should call around and see if anyone you know knows of any AC techs that work for commercial companies. Depending on who they work for they can do side work and get way cheaper prices.

I hear it a lot of times. That river city just upsales or encourages entire system change outs. When a great majority of the time it isn't needed.

Accutemp

Get what you pay for in today's service industry honestly. I went with them and mighta cost me a bit extra but they did more than any of the other guys even came close to suggesting. Most of them just wanted to replace the issue. Accutemp suggested re-working all the duct work for more efficiency. About a grand more than competitor but now I have all brand new duct work and adequate ventilation.

I simply could not because I hate that guy's voice so much on the commercials "....and remember the bitter taste of a poor installation is worse than the taste of that lowest price" or whatever the frick he says, its like nails on a chalk board every time I hear him come on the radio.

We use Accutemp. They replaced our entire system and ductwork while we were at work. Came home to a cool house and didn't even know they were there. We were able to take advantage of 0% financing through the manufacturer, which helps pay that BIG bill.
