mean, if he thinks making it in the military means he's going to work in a local recruiting office and drive a crap car, then he's either really naive or is just looking for an excuse not to join
I think it's just that he really really doesn't know how the world works.... he is a smart kid as in he will try and listen and is willing to work, I just think he has been surrounded by so much complete incompetence in his friends and family, that he doesn't know he doesn't know.

Today just kinda making hints about how if I could go back, one of the things I would change would have been joining the military.

He mentioned something about 'what about the reserves' and I didn't really know an answer, but it sounds like he is scared to be deployed or whatever for so long. And I guess I get it, at 20 years old you are pretty much signing that you are about to haul arse on your own for 20% of your life thus far.

Any other ideas y'all may have? I know for sure he should be able to get some sort of federal and state help I would assume. I mean look at all the welfare folks running around. This is the type of person that the government needs to be trying to help get on their feet because he is a percent example of someone with a couple doors open, could really be an asset to our society and not one of these welfare leaches. But he could also make a single mistake and his life be altered forever. From getting busted with drugs, to knocking up some huzzy etc.,

I mean he is so naive on it all that he actually googles the top 10 list of easiest jobs to get that make the lost money or something like that

Any schools or programs or apprentice type work out there than anyone could recommend. Seriously anything or info helps.

The best thing you could do for him is try to get him to understand that his situation is going to go downhill fast if he does not start making decisions based on long term goals instead of instant gratification.

The military may help with this but it is up to him, honestly he need to use his cash for things other than pills, weed, and beer, this part is up to him.

SS, I have not read much into this thread. But, if he needs a place to stay..I will or a friend will take him in. Sounds like the military is his only real option.

Thank you, that's pretty awesome of you.

He seems to be okay at the moment, but things seem very fluid at the moment, as in he is at a different house (and back and forth to a few) maybe 2-3 times a week, with every couple weeks a new house is tossed into his rotation, his job at Pizza Hut is on the NS, so he tries to stay as close as possible but I don't believe there is any public transportation at all in the Slidell money. He has told me that he has had to pay for a ride back and forth to work that cost him every penny that he actually made for the shite. So pretty much working for free those days just so he can kee his job.

I know people like to be all 'pick yourself up by your bootstraps' here on the OT and everyone has their self-built empire, and not meaning to sound too cliche, but the struggle really is real for some.

I'll keep you updated on him or whatnot if you would like, Edit

Go to Chuck E Cheese. Win a lot of tickets. Buy a great toy. Resell toy on the street for profit.

A military career could open doors for him later in life. Plenty of tech training and the plants also hire a lot of ex military for operations. Books a million sells asvab training books like Barron's. Good luck with him.

Is he smart enough to learn electrical, plumbing or HVAC? Or if he likes cars, get him a job at an auto repair shop or body shop.

If so, take him around to some contractors to see if he could get a job/apprenticeship with them.

Explain to him that he won't become rich as an apprentice, but he could become rich if he becomes a business owner.

Everybody makes fun of blue collar workers, until they need them to fix their shite.

Very nice of you to do this bro.

No problem, I will be traveling a lot.. so idk if I am the best fit. Will talk to a friend that is ex military and explain his situation. I took a screenshot of your email and will keep in touch. I don't want to say it is a 100% thing, but I will do my best to find him a stable place. It worrys me to see decent people on the street.

ETA: Doing everything in my power to get accomidations. Does he have a valid DL? I might be able to find a clunker from family to help him out. However, he would have to get insurance and what not, but would not have to actually purchase a car. Check your email tomorrow and I will update you. Currently not in NOLA, so it will be challenging until I can get back. I don't have a lot of money, but I will help out the best I can.

If he is as hard up as you describe, the first steady paychecks he sees after joining the military, he will feel loaded.

Military can be a great route for someone willing to work hard, and it sounds like he already works hard with little to show for it.

The guy driving the beater probably hasn't made the best financial decisions--or on the flip side he's making great decisions by driving it till the wheels fall off. But more likely he got married 19, quickly had 3 kids, his wife went on a girl's trip to Destin, and now he's divorced. Explain that shite to him.

Good people here on the OT

I live In a small one bedroom in the Channel and can't really put him up, one reason I'm
Transitioning out to save up a few dollars, but he is always welcome if shite hits the fan... he seems pretty utilitarianand has learned to live pretty basic

I have a bead on an offshore supply vessel down in Bayou country that is 28-14, that I may try and get him in... him being gone 28 days could be a good thing for him where as he can save some money while working and come home for weeks with a pocket full of cash, and after a few hitches he can get himself some decent dependable used Wheels dorm $5/6k I'm sure. Also he can line wherever, just have to be back to the port on that 14th day.

this is almost the exact thing I told the kid...

Told him everyone makes mistakes in life and has to live with the consequences, that him driving a clunker could
Mean kids and divorce early, possibly wreck and DWI for him? Etc etc, just trying to say that people get themselves in a bind, you just have to be willing to do whatever it takes to get past it.

Abadeebab, you good people.... I'll
Be honest and say I don't even think the kid would want to accept any type of 'handouts' but helping with advice or steering him to affordable housing or vehicle and training and a career,... a break, is what I'm sure he would appreciate.

Thanks again

ETA: also the two navy guys he met with, he said they had all this info to spew at the tip of their tongue, but he asked them seperatly, straight up 'in hindsight you feel you made the right decision when you joined the navy?' And he said both sort of fumbled over their words and really didn't answer the question directly with enthusiasm like they had with their spiel.

Good on you man. I am still a young man myself, but I am not stranger to struggling. I think offshore is another great idea too. Will be in touch with you. If he does decide to do offshore before I can find him a stable place, please allow me to gift him some books that helped me out during my "lost days". Again, thanks for coming here and trying to keep a kid off the streets.

yes, I believe he is smart enough to do whatever he sets his mind too

I will say he really seems to have a bad outlook when I mention 'schoo', he equates it with his 10th grade at slidell high where he dropped out, but I've tried to explain that university or basic training school (whatever it's called) isn't anything like that.... not sure if he had real bad experiences or what
