If you're interested in the entire ordeal with Mark Essex on the HJ, read the book "A Terrible Thunder".

The 'Phrog' was a pretty good helicopter. Hated it see it retired, but it was time to park them. Your Dad probably had some really good times flying it.
HC-6 Norfolk.

My buddy was the crew chief on that helicopter. They were bad dudes- he was just back from Vietnam. No problem- they went to solve a problem.
He and I worked together all over the world- he told me sometimes he would just lay out in the machines we were working on smoking a joint. Like it was no big deal.

I flew 53Es. Although I chopped over to a Frog squadron for a WestPac.

Ever make it to Subic 87-89? Might have saved your drunk arse from getting your pockets picked crossing the bridge over shite River coming back to the base after a night in Olongapo! T’s Tavern ring a bell? Florida Club? I stood watch at Main Gate many a nite!

I spent a few evenings on Magsaysay Street in the fall and winter of '90/91 enjoying some cold San Miguel's.

Great story. Essex was also suspected of starting the tragic Rault Center fire 5 weeks earlier.
