Well many now are gathered around family and friends,
Smiles born of love and laughter this Memorial Day weekend,
And many a grill will fire up, be they charcoal or propane,
To cook up tasty vittles for the watching of the game,
And don't scrimp on the merriment, and waste no ounce of cheer,
Your celebrations been paid for, and the price it came quite dear,
The cost, unnumbered lives cut down by bomb and gas and gun,
The tears of grieving mothers o'er every fallen son,
Of babes who wake up wailing for fathers that don't come home,
And endless fields of crosses hewn from alabaster stone,
Of men who died on battlefields from France to Vietnam,
Of black cars bearing somber news back home to dad and mom,
Of spreading pools of blood drunk up by thirsty foreign sand,
In deserts in North Africa, Iraq, Afghanistan,
For boys who drew their last breath in some cursed jungle hell,
And weeping widows dressed in black that hear their fune'ral bells,
So as you have a good time amongst all your kith and kin,
First raise a toast to all the boys who won't come home again,
For those to sacrificed themselves so others might live on,
Pour one out for the memories of those who now are gone,
And keep within your hearts the ones they left behind, alone,
