I've tried. It's tough.

I know once I finish this project, they're going to send me to a horrible place in eastern Arkansas. I'm with what's probably the best passing engineering firm in the country. But I can't live on the road. I'm at that point in my life, that even lived in a lot of really cool places. But the only place I want to be is in New Orleans.

It's a dirty, crime ridden shite hole. But it feels like home.

When I went back for Mardi Gras (my second time in 3 years), it just felt right. 3 hours after I arrived, I was crying in a parade. 6 hours after arriving, I was on a stage, leading a band into second line tunes. The other time I went back, I ended up on stage at a bar with the Wild Tchoupitoulas for a few tunes.

I played a decent amount of music in Colorado. I actually got paid more than most Nola gigs. Though I never had nearly as much fun playing. I'm kinda scared to go back because of the crime. But I miss that dirty bitch too much.

Damn, I forgot that started that early. I loved seeing that fricker die.

It's definitely one of my favorite shows of all time. I doubt anything will ever beat The Wire. But it's a great show.

Nola has never been my cup of tea. Grew up around Laffy and BR. Very seldom went to Nola as a youngster other than to watch Lsu in the dome or go to Mardi Gras to see titties (military days what can I say ) Went through nola about 6 months ago and only thing that came to my head was shithole. Sorry CC

That's how my husband feels about it. The last time we were there someone asked him if he wanted to buy drugs while he was waiting for me. But I like it. It's like no place on earth. I'm not sure about living there but CC I'm sure being a musician makes it feel like home to you.

It's not most people's cup of tea. I completely understand. Me and Super Saint agreed, your brain has to be wired in a different way to enjoy it. Plus, you gotta avoid tourist areas as much as possible. Bourbon is a disgusting shithole, and that's before the hood rats show up at around 10-11 pm.

Though I do love the occasional Laffy trip. I love International Festival. Black Pot might be the coolest festival I've been to, anywhere. Though I don't think I could settle down there.

That Nola music just speaks to me. It's probably the only town in America that truly loves drums.

I got involved with playing parades and with some Mardi Gras Indian tribes down there. I got to do some really cool things, even played Jazz Fest twice.

It's sketchy, but down there, it just feels like home. Having a ton of family two hours away helps. It's nice to have a place to go to get away from the chaos. Especially during the summer.

Though I'll admit, every summer, I was sending resumes across the country. I wish I could snow bird. Then it would be perfect.

Bourbon St or Canal?

Saddest part CC about Nola is that it could be one of the most sought after tourist spots in the world. Nola doesn't even touch on what it could be. The history, the culture, the food, the jazz, etc. It is unique in this country's history but the politics and trash that lives there now handcuffs it's potential so much. Sure it is a tourist spot but so damn wasted on what it could be.

Canal.

I agree FLBoo. It has greater potential but no leadership.

I'm very aware. They turned Frenchmen St into a high class Bourbon St environment. But that'll just push the trash over there. It also killed the music district for the locals. But that's happened before. It used to be on Broad. I'm sure Bourbon St was cool decades ago.

I'm hoping that with the black and white communities socializing more then ever, people of all races get over their bigotry and bitterness. It won't be easy. But I still have hope that it'll become a world class city again.

As Tennessee Williams said, "America has only three cities: New York, San Francisco, and New Orleans. Everywhere else is Cleveland."

I think every educated liberal in the city agrees with that. I don't know anyone that liked Mitch. But that fricker knows how to pander.

The government corruption is the biggest problem. Nobody trusts the police. And I can't really blame them. And as much as I can hate parts of American policing, it's still a requirement for a civilized society to function. And it's a dangerous, shitty job that few want to do. Redirect for authority is essential. But at the same time, Authority needs to earn respect. It's pretty much a clusterfrick.

I definitely don't know the solution. But I know any social/societal changes don't happen overnight. It may take a generation or two. But hopefully, it eventually happens.

You can't help what you love. I can see it being a great place for someone who loves music. I wouldn't be afraid to live there. Like other cities you just have to know where you can go and where to avoid if you can. Every place has their issues. It has a lot to offer.

I think it has something that some cities in the south have pieces but nola has it all. For instance Charleston it has the southern charm, history, food. Smaller towns such as Savannah and St.Augustine(15 mins from my house) capitalize on its history and they thrive on the tourism industry. Clean, return customers, and word of mouth make these places a great destination. Atlanta is the closest big city but doesn't touch Nola if nola would clean itself up and cater to those tourist. I hear people all the time out here that have been to Nola talk about the food but also about how nasty it is around bourbon st. Honestly I get what you and Saint talk about. I get that when I go to St.Augustine. The place to me feels like Europe and the old spanish fort built in 1650 gives it that vibe along with inlet filled with the old spanish ships in the harbor. They play that card. New Orleans card now is the highest murder rate in the nation now. You get what I am getting at here.

I just wish Ghetto thugs would start using better, happier drugs. Cocaine and heroin creates addicts and causes crime. Give those hoodrats LSD, mushrooms, or MDMA. I bet violent crime would go down.

(Kinda joking, but also kinda serious. Though I do blame the war on drugs for our nation's crime problem)

No doubt. Though I have to add one thing...

I love Bourbon St, because it keeps the douchey tourists and thugs away from the parts I like to be. Though I hate it's what people outside the city immediately think about when they think of Nola.
