Because when the SEC decided to expand, their interest was to get schools in markets that would increase viewership. Texas A&M has a strong fan base and allows the SEC brand to tap into Texas. And Missouri, not only was it the easiest team to get into the SEC at the time, but Missouri reaches into the Kansas City market, which is relatively big. So it allowed the SEC brand to spread into parts of Texas, expand north of Arkansas into a pretty strong market (KC).
