Pretty sure he chose to go to trial so he could act as his own attorney and torment her on the stand. For maximum shock value he waited until just before she took the stand to finally petition for real to be his own counsel.
Plus he got to cross examine two of his kids that he hadn't seen in 5 years. And the bonus was that he got texts read that called his exes new husband a jerk, a-hole and boogerman.

This guy is actually not doing a terrible job like I expected. Really quite entertaining. I would never go down this path, of course, but I really expected an inbred when I started watching.

I went back to listen to the recording of his interview
