I lived pretty well off of 60,000 when I lived in Gulf Shores. In fact I lived on the beach and had a new car. Could I have lived better? Yes. Was I ok and got plenty of pussy? Yes.

You will be fine.

Yes, I did. I have no issue telling you I was wrong. I have not looked into starting salaries for careers in a long time. My question to you will be, is it impossible to come out of college and make 80-100k a year?

Atleast you admit you were wrong, rare on the OT

And yes, it is possible to make 80-100k out of college, but that is rare

Im not backing you nor am I helping you.

The degree/license I'm talking about is given out by only 6 schools in the US. The enrollment isnt high but the attrition rate is. These people making this money is a very small percentage of college graduates

you didnt pay attention to anything because you went to college for 3 years(making a 3.95) and you had no idea what people make when they leave college. how does someone with a gpa like that and almost finished school not know what salaries are being paid when people graduate?

Again? I get it. I was wrong. My bad.

You began by saying these numbers were what you thought to be the average. Now, you are referring to outliers. These exist, of course, but this is not where you began the argument.

I was gonna go in it after high school but I wanted to go to vet school. Friends went straight to maritime and I went to LSU. Partied too much when I got to LSU and didnt have the GPA when I finished grad school(3.3) to get in.

Tried to get on with wildlife and fisheries for over two years and had the means to go to maritime school. Talked to people that went and they all had job offers out that paid ridiculous amounts to what I was looking at. had the means to go back to school so decided to do it.

Almost went and sailed with them last summer.

Huh?

Of course its not impossible. These people are doing it but its a verrrrrrry small number of people.

They in no way represent the average college graduate's salary after they leave school.

I actually ended the argument when I admitted I was wrong.

I believe someone else made it sound impossible to graduate and produce 70k+. Hence, that part of the conversation.

Two different arguments.

You know people I assume? Is getting into the school or actually getting employed what's generally so hard? Know someone else who is supposed to end up at the A&M school like you, but his father can help him out.

I see this now. I was wrong with my initial thoughts on the average salary.

I was just saying that it's not crazy to think its possible to graduate college with a career making the higher money.

No one said it was impossible. Everyone said a few people do but the average is way lower than that.

I dont know the numbers but I would say you are in the top 10% of earners(recent grads) if you are making 80k right out of college

Actually, it looks to be lower than that. According to a different couple of sites Engineering is the highest, with an average starting salary of about 65k.

To go sail with them? No

shite was getting mixed up here at my school and I had good grades so they were trying to get me on a boat to get my required sea days in.

Getting into the school seems to be a weird topic imo. Coming out of highschool, it seems like you need really good grades. If you have a degree already or are former military, you are pretty much guaranteed acceptance. Getting back to the highschool kids. I dont know what the deal is because I hear of people getting rejected with good grades but there are some certifiable dumbasses at my school. Im amazed that some of these people will be driving large ships some day.

As for the industry. Many people get jobs because of who you know, but what industry isnt like that?

It is expensive and they(A&M) dont give out scholarships to incoming freshmen

Appreciate the info. Not seriously interested but was asking more out of curiosity.

I've always heard how large of role nepotism & politics played in maritime. Maybe it's a Nola (Crescent River Association) thing and not so much an industry thing?
