My brother works for Fidelity, and he told me that he has seen younger adults inherit $30 million, and 2 years later after mostly penny stock investing have it dwindled to $300k. Could you imagine inheriting $30 mil and turning it into $300k?
I always play a little bit with risker investments when I'm poor, but more money I have gotten, the less risk I take. If I had $30 mil? I'd put that 1/5th in bonds, 2/5th on SP500, and 2/5th on Nasdaq 100, and then live off the interest. If you make 7% a year, that is over $2 mil. Just live off the returns. I can't imagine what they think of themselves after turning 30 mil to 300k. He says it happens way more than you'd think amongst ultra rich, but it is usually inherited money and not self earned.
