Was wondering what programs people went through and if they felt it was worth it.

What do you mean by “program”? Like what type of policy? I’m not sure I understand your question.

Why be an underwriter instead of simply passing an exam and write actual business?

Go to Money Board and abandon this topic.

I can't "pass" due to family history to get a reasonable rate. I shouldn't have asked. I was hoping y'all would at least leave a question of me trying to further my education alone. There are a lot of different certifications, so really was just wondering if anyone here has done one.

Honestly, like the other poster said, I’d skip the underwriter route and just go straight to taking a course and passing a test so you can write actual business. Much more money in writing the business than approving the business.

Do you think the Academy of Life Underwriting is legit and worth it? It will take years until I can get anything fully, I just want to start in the right place.

Most I know were hired out of college and trained by the company they work for, there's also continued education programs and professional designations.

It's an odd field with a lot of different backgrounds, I know a nurse, a pharmacist, a high school graduate, many others all who do this. Any past medical knowledge is helpful.

The senior underwriters probably average 75K a year and most work remotely.

My company is a little different than traditional insurance. We specialize in premium financing, it not like walking down the street selling term. And we have an in house underwriter, which is why I'm inquiring.

You don't have to quit your current job to write business. You can be appointed by any number of carriers who can actually help with marketing and leads. The days of bothering friends and family are long gone.
