Lead off hitter all my days. Too short, strike zone was nothing. Automatic walk. Couldn’t catch my arse with both hands. Starting right fielder. I could take instructions and knew damn well how to back up first base.

I tackled a guy who later played for the Chargers. I couldn't see for a few moments and briefly considered that I might actually be dead, but I got him on the ground. I honestly considered whether next time would be worth it but there was no next time. He just turned on the jets and ran by me after that.

Oh and I did make the first tackle on the opening kick off in Ole Miss Spring game one year, and ended up with like 3 or 4 tackles on kickoffs. Even made the clarion ledger and was offered or kinda offered a walk on spot but the SEC canned it. I wouldn’t have taken it anyway. I also got cracked ribs in a perfect helmet pattern on the botched onside kick on the last kickoff of the game. (We did all the kickoffs on both teams) But the amazing part of this is that I woke up at some damn dorm or something at 8:30 am and basically walked to the meeting spot for the walk of champions and was so hung over it was everything I could do not to barf on the sidelines. It was so freaking hot.

If they would have had great season it would have been something but they won like 4 or 5 games

Summer before my Senior year of HS, running summer track in Houston. I had been told I was favored to win the 5000 meter race that night so when 5 other guys took off super fast, 4:50 first mile, which was way faster than I had ever gone out, I stayed with them figuring they would die. Nope, thru 2 miles in 9:45. I floundered the last 600 and finished in 15:17 which was a PR by almost 1 minute. Turns out the guys running so fast were all ranked in the top 10 in the state for the 1600 and 3200 the year before. If I would have known who they were, I probably wouldn't have tried to stay with them. After that race I knew I could run with the big dogs and won some big cross country meets in Houston including the Rice Invitational where Bobby Beck of LSU won the collegiate race. He found me afterwords and asked me to go for a warm down jog and the LSU coach talked to my coach about me running for LSU the next year.

Last Little League game before high school we had our coach's brother sub in for him. The brother knew me and couple of other kids from our neighborhood. Being the only lefty on the team of course I was a pitcher. I threw my arm out early in 2nd inning trying to throw gas against the best team in the league. After about the third pitch I had nothing left and told sub coach I can't throw.

I don't know if it was because he wasn't familiar with the other players or what but he made me stay out there. I proceeded to strike out the side and two more the next inning. I could see the batters eyes light up when that 20 mph ball came their way, then just swing as the ball landed on home plate. I didn't mow them down as much as lulled them to sleep.

I lead every pitch up the Regular route on Fairview Dome in Tuolumne. Just 5.9 though.

Used to be Louisiana State Champion in Tae Kwon Do. There was something very therapeutic about kicking another man in the head.

The fitness test in middle school, a billion years ago.
I did 61 sit ups in one minute.
Managed to eke out the 10 pull ups, too.

Oh, and one of the Wonsley boys at Moss Point who went to State I think, I had been hooking it up with all game, (he had arms like popeye) told me after the game “I was a tough ball player. “

He was linebacker and I was hitting him all game. He hit me with forearm under my chin that nearly knock my arse out, but I caught him a few times too. Back then you could put your helmet right though their legs and cut them and for some damn reason I was freaking all pro at that. I literally cut all 3 linebackers more times that I can count, (you cut the first one and other two get cut off etc too) it actually got where I wasn’t allowed to hit them below waist in practice cause they were scared I would get someone hurt. Hell we were still allowed to hit in the back or clip until my senior year. We had a guy nicknamed “jimmy the clipper” lol
