Keep in mind that the battleships were rendered obsolete around 10 years before
Come on now. 10 years before was 1905. This was the golden age of battleships when they were at the zenith of their power and importance. Remember this was about the time the British introduced the HMS Dreadnaught which revolutionized battleship design and indeed ushered in it's own class of BB worldwide.

It was great!
G.J. Meyer's "A World Undone" is a great read in conjunction with Carlin's podcasts.

With the building of the drednoughts in 1906, I would argue that they were probably considered obsolete.
Dreadnaughts were battleships. In fact, they were the ultimate and most powerful battleships ever built. To say dreadnoughts made the battleship obsolete would be like saying the F-22 Raptor made fighter airplanes obsolete.

While that may be true now, the higher admiralty in the British navy at the time didn't see it that way because they had more of the drednoughts and super-drednoughts than anybody else in the world. That is specifically why they chose to use battleships and not drednoughts in the Dardanelles Campaign.

More fundamentally, the straits were not a strategically important target within the context of WWI.
Churchill repeatedly wanted to start campaigns in secondary theatres that - even if the UK had been victorious - wouldn't have directly contribute to ending the war. Dardanelles in WWI, Husky in WWII, and his proposed invasion of Norway in 1943 are all good examples of this. He was an unparalled politician and leader but not a military strategist.

Obsolete is a bad description.
They were outdated and expendable.
I listed to almost 24 hours of Dan Carlin and I was a little disappointed he didn't get more into Africa and the Middle East.

He apparently has hours of bonus material that he couldn't fit into the podcast. Supposedly that will be available at some point as a bonus episode
