London has a phenomenal tidal surge every day and a lesser surge. With a draining out to accompany both. Crap(yes) is going to accumulate but the (sorry about this) flushing of the river as tides go out at least turns the water and lets some oxygen in. As the city grew, the creeks still flowed but did so under the city.

Ship captains knew how important it was to catch the tide, to be carried east to the North Sea.

I had to google image search that one. Apparently there's a replica of Stonehenge in Odessa, TX and it fully lives up to that already-hilarious description.
