I always ask them to swing by my favorite late night food place here and always buy them something. Usually just a nice grad student trying to help tuition, not some foreigner that acts like you're annoying them by existing.

It's there quickly, no cash exchanges hands, and both driver and rider rate each other to weed out assholes/drunks/etc.
