The LA DEQ is of "great assistance."

TLDR:

- Excess paint. Never going to use it again.
- Want to "legally" dispose of it. Not interested in putting kitty litter in paint and allowing it to dry out.

Places that will legally take excess liquid paint?

An apartment complex dumpster isn't acceptable?

LSU lakes have accepted everything I've ever thrown into them FWIW.

From what I remember, if you can let it dry out and harden its fine to throw away in your trash.

I did not know that you couldn't seal the paint can or let it dry out and throw it in a dumpster. How is that worse than other trash?

Because it bursts in the compactor or something and gets everywhere?

Granted, I've never disposed of paint before, so this is new to me.

For one or two cans, perhaps I could look the other way. But not for the amount that I have to dispose of.

That's why I want the "legal" way as my only option.

List it in the free section of CL. I bet someone would come get all that.

Call a paint company and see if they will take it or give you advice.

Same reason you can't put motor oil (legally) in a dumpster. It's a hazardous material.

If they spot it, they will take it out and leave it.

It's 1/2 cans (about 12) of very OLD paint. You would not want it. Trust me.

No, those people have been through enough. I'm not about to add insult to their injury.

Probably the next best step and avenue to take.

Donate to Habitat for Humanity Restore. I've seen some very old paint cans available for purchase there.

Our county landfills have a dumpster specifically for paint cans. LA doesn't offer this?

Someone will always take if off your hands if you do that.

Or drop it off to Habitat for Humanity. If its still usable at all, they'll put it to use for a good cause.

This may be a viable option. I'll certainly look into this.

Update, I called my local Sherwin Williams store. If I want to dispose of the paint in the trash, the person that answered the phone said that Home Depot sells a "powder" that will harden the paint and once hardened, it can then be disposed of in the trash.
