A lot of coonasses names are spelled differently even amongst people in the same family. My grandfather spells his last name different than some of his own brothers. He spells it with an "ain" and his brothers use "ein"

I guess it has a lot to do with lack of education growing up among the older generations. My grandfather was one of the older siblings and dropped out of school in 7th grade to work then joined the army at 16 (lied about his age) to send money back for his younger siblings and parents to live on.
