Lawrence was born on 12 September 1909 in Norwood, Louisiana, United States of America. He had fourteen siblings. After growing up on a farm, he moved to New Orleans to work at a laundry and at a parking garage. During World War II, he served in the predominantly African American 91st Engineer Battalion from 1940 to 1945. He saw action in the Pacific, mainly in New Guinea and in the Philippines. He rose to the rank of Private 1st Class, which is the third rank in the United States Army.

I’d love to hear his thoughts on Afghanistan. He has one hell of a perspective on war.
