Last Minute Flight--Am I Going To Pay Out the arse?

Was hoping to fly to New Orleans this weekend leaving Dallas after work so 6:30ish or later and flying back Sunday afternoon. It's a last minute thing obviously. I checked Southwest and I can get to Nola for less than $100 but coming back will be $200+. Was hoping to keep the whole RT airfare at less than $200.
I've never bought plane tickets last minute before and was wondering if I keep checking prices, will they get lower if the flight isn't sold out?
Any other ideas?

I have used Spirit on a last minute flight. You will be charged for everything but if you can travel light, might be worth a look.

Thanks for that link. The American flight looked promising for $197 until I saw its only that price if I fly out Sunday at like 6am... Anything later and it increases considerably.
It's not a long drive but for a quick 2 day trip, I don't feel like sitting in the car for 16hrs RT.
Does anyone know if the prices will fluctuate at all between now and Friday or are chances they will just increase?

To be on the plane at 6am Sunday, i'd have to be leaving the house for 4:30am. Nothing wrong with getting up early, but I wouldn't be getting into Nola until about 10pm Friday night. That just gives me one day.
I was hoping to fly out Sunday night, so that i'd have most of Sunday too.
I'll just do the surprise visit another time.

Used to make that trip regularly when I lived in Dallas. Both Southwest and American have an early bird flight on Monday that leaves around 6ish and puts you back in Dallas around 7:30am.

The airline colluding is getting ridiculous. Oil/gas is as cheap as ever, yet prices are jacked way tge frick up.
Too few airlines, not enough competition. Especially considering their collusion.

Take the flight for cheap and rent a car on the way back if you can't find another cheap flight.
