Serious question - for all the people who think the Robert E. Lee statue is completely historical and has nothing to do with bitterness or sour grapes, then why was me made to he deliberately facing north in defiance? This was clearly a little jibe from the statue and circle planners to the North and in protestation towards the outcome of the war.

I am not against the statue and would oppose removing it, but I understand where Landrieu is coming from - New Orleans has clearly become a liberal, global city where tolerance is vital to the recurring tourism, etc. I don't think any European cities would keep this monument nor would the San Franciscos or New York Cities of America.

Why don't we just rip up everything and start over with historic African names?

You realize she isn't trying to remove it because he's white, but rather because he fought to keep slavery, right?

Spare me the "he fought for state's rights", as the state right they were so up in arms over was the right to slaves.

It's unreal how behind the times some of you are.

frick this guy. I just got into it over fb about the confederate flag with some idiots. It baffles me that people still think the civil war was about slavery.

LOL if you're really stupid enough to post pro-confederate flag views on Facebook under your real name in 2015 you're either a complete dumbass or you have no career aspirations.

Tom Benson Boulevard is a no brainer. Dude is arguably the greatest New Orleanian in the history of the city.

In January, I celebrate Robert E Lee day instead of Martin Luther King Jr. day.

Drew Brees Boulevard

Drew Brees changed when he told the Saints he wants 20 million a year. He is no longer the "Super Bowl Savior" but the "so Greedy that the Saints can't go to another Super Bowl because they can't afford other players"

times change and Drew Brees has changed

And yet people wanted to kill him in 2005 and early 2006 for trying to move the team to San Antonio.

No one hates Drew, no one.
Archie Manning Avenue could be another one.

I always thought naming landmarks, schools, etc. after Traitors to the United States was odd.

The Union was far too forgiving of the South after the war & allowed these people to remain in power.

It was forewarned then that being too magnanimous with the CSA traitors would give birth to this Neo Confederate nonsense.

"Their social power must be destroyed. When traitors become numerous enough treason becomes respectable".

The proud monuments to these traitors confirms this quote.

Why can't we have statues and monuments of past figures because they were important figures in history and not get all butt hurt about them?
