I do not remember Jimmy the Crow or Sandra but I have been to all of those places even Gum Cove. Try these ones: Abe's Grocery on Moss and Division Streets, Fred's Cafeteria, Tom & Mac's, Woody's John's Barn. Also The Ritz, Delta, Arcade, Ribbex theaters the Surf and Midway drive-ins. Goosport Recreation Center, the Isreal LaFleur television show on Channel 25, the wrestling matches at McDonald's Sportatorium

Is Harris's Restaurant in Hayes still any good?

Skakey's Pizza sounds right, wasn't Nelson's Donut's right next door or something? When they were building Shakey's my father was doing some sheetmetal work over at Nelson's .. so he knew the owner back then of Shakey's .. I think that was the name of the first pizza place. Anyway I got a job there when they opened. I remember all they played on that crazy Juke Box was Age of Aquarius the whole time they were opened .. I hated that song because I heard day after day after day!
My family were good friends with the owner of Shakey's too. He employed several of my relatives throughout the years.

Haven't been in years. I went to school with the original owner's daughters and the guy that owns it now.

Jimmy the Crow was a crow that flew around town I think in the very late 50's. It'd land on your handlbars of your bicycle and say, "Jimmy the Crow" and that's all I remember about him. He'd make his rare appearance and be gone. He must have been someone's pet but I wonder who. I know one thing, if you tried to pet him you'd get nipped.
I remember the other Abe's Grocery also, I remember when they tore down the old Abe's on Hwy 14, we were over there watching them and omg the rats that ran out of that place would have shocked you. I liked Mr. Abraham though, he was good people. I went through school with his son Mark .. God I'm getting so old I think he name was Mark, I've not thought of this stuff in almost 40 years.
I remember Fred's Cafeteria, and Tom & Mac's, I have no recollection of Woody' John's Barn ... I know I'm gonna spell this name wrong but do you remember Brousse's Toyland? It was first located way out north of town in an old tin barn behind the guys house, that was in the 50's as I remember, then they moved to Enterprise just south of 12th street across from Burger Chef if my memory serves me right? Are they still in existance?
I also remember there was a second TV station in Lake Charles other than KPLC, I've often associated it with KLOU the radio station, but that may be wrong, and I can no longer remember which channel they were on out of our numerous choices of 12 back then.. lol. We used to play PeeWee Baseball back behind the station and they'd put us on TV while we were playing. Sheesh now that's really digging back, I must have been six or seven years old back then.. so that was the end of the 50's!
I don't remember as many street names as you guys, is the old George Theriot's store even still there anymore? I remember going to Landry School to swim in the summers. I had forgotten Joseph's drive in name, I was calling it Joes Drive In .. it was a dinky little out of the way place but the food was really good, I do remember that much.
What about an old guy that had a fishing pier right before you entered the port, that had to be the early to mid 60's, he had one arm? I think they called him One Armed Joe. He'd go out shrimping all the time alone, we were all amazed he did so well with just one arm.
Wow you guys are really making me think back. Sorry if my posts are too long, too many memories I guess.

John's Barn was a dive on 18th Street east of Ryan. Lots of early pool games and shuffleboard when construction got rained out. Owned by LSU Tigers John and Mike DeMairie's kinfolk. Brousse's Toyland was indeed across from The Burger Chef. No more Theriot's stores but the buildings are there. The three Abraham Brothers are all living but Gus's daughter, Janet,(LCHS 1971) passed last year. All good folk. That was Barbe Pier on Shell Beach Drive near the port. Wayne Simmons was a Rosteet guy. Could he be Sandra's brother?

Holy hell, John's bar sausage and bloody mary's were life savers.

SC, you spelled it exactly right.
I remember the run on chess sets there when Fischer played Spassky in 1972.
I played Midget (5th grade) and Junior B (sixth grade) football at Henry Heights during 1967-68.
Back then, all of us elementary school kids on the south side (Henry Heights, College Oaks, Brentwood, Dolby) dreamed of getting to be teenagers and putting on the purple and white of LaGrange.
LaGrange was a powerhouse from 1967-69 with a cast of stars that started as sophomores for Charley Oakley ... some guys I remember in the class (I was friends with a lot of their little brothers) - Mike Patrick, Jack Blackhetter, Kenny Cagle (his father was "Big Chief" Cagle), Jim Benglis etc. etc.
Their senior year, they lost the opener to Woodlawn and Joe Ferguson at Gator Stadium - (now Mims Stadium). In fact they were 0-3-1 in non district but then marched through district like Sherman through Georgia and went to the AAA state finals before losing to Bogalusa.
We were all shocked the next year after all those guys graduated when the mighty Gators went 0-10.
Jamie Manuel, who starred at S. J. Welch, started at quarterback as a sophomore that year - unheard of back in those days.
By the time Jamie was a senior, the Gators were pretty good again but then a new school named Barbe was built in far south Lake Charles and a new era began.
Remember old LaGrange Junior High on the corner of Ryan and West School? It was the OLD Lagrange Senior building. Not a trace of it left now.
My junior high sweetie was Jamie Beam - Lake Charles American Press Editor Jim Beam's daughter. We both lived on Vanderbilt Street. I lost track of her after I moved to Barbe my junior year ... not sure who she married.
Yep SnowCajun ... I could ramble on with memories too.
I have a lot of good ones of my childhood and youth in Lake Charleytown.

Remember the McCombs (Robert, Gene, Gilbert)?
Those guys were some bad asses.

OMG I can't believe the Abraham brothers are still alive, they must be ancient .. lol. I don't remember that pier name, only the old man who ran it. That was so long ago. I don't remember if Sandra had a brother or not, Wayne Simmons doesn't ring a bell. She was a dear old friend and I'd love to chat with her again, we exchanged letters while I was away at military school.
I lived across from Hamilton School so I went there, then to Pearl Watson, then we moved over to 11th street close to Hwy 14 and that threw me into Rosteet Jr. High .. I remember the principal there and he was great, but the coach was mean .. big guy and totally bald. One kid gave him a birthday present once, an envelope with a card and a comb and the card read, "I know you'll love this gift, you'll never part with it" .. bwhahah. Never the less the coach picked up the kid and shook him .. I think it kinda got all of our attentions.
I went to school with one of the Valentine boys if you remember any of them, married his sister actually .. but I won't go into the mistakes of my life at this moment. Life sure has taken some odd twists. I need to run into Spokane a bit, I'll be back later. As Bob Hope always said, "thanks for the memories" ..

I don't remember any McCombs, I remember two LaComb girls though .. Debbie and Diane! :-) I actually miss Debbie now that I've thought of her, she was a great friend .. hmmm... anyone know her? She married a guy named Steve Nelson I think.

Club F/X was fun
Long before there was F/X, there was the Texas Pelican, which was across the interstate from where F/X was. The Circle Club was across the street. These clubs were badass because all the Texas people would come over...18 was the drinking age at the time, but it was 19 in TX. Great times, especially at the Pelican. The recollections of LC bring back a lot of memories. I had numerous shirts stained with the mustard they served with the sausage at John's Barn.

I think I do remember the Texas Pelican and Circle Club also. Something about green and white comes to memory, was there a Pelican sign that was white and had green neon lights on it, maybe with the Pelican's mouth opening and closing? Man that's been sooooo long ago! I remember the drinking age being 18 though, but I thought Texas was 21.
I know I got locked up over in Orange, Tx once for hitchhiking on the highway to Houston and then we walked into the woods when the police officer slowed down and eyed us really close from the other side of the road, so we hoofed it into the woods and ended up in a ton of trouble .. there had been a murder in town and I guess since we headed for the woods we were the #1 suspects for awhile.
I never will forget the cold fried balogna and balogna gravy on rice twice a day for food, and a grilled cheese sandwich so stale it would have broken your toe had you dropped it, and cold coffee, not to mention the unpadded cold steel bunks. Sure taught me I didn't want to be in jail. They kept us there three days before we were allowed to use the phone.. sheesh! At least I learned from it.

Can't remember the colors, but yes, the sign was a huge bird with the mouth moving.

Texas was 21 I believe for a long time, but lowered it to 19 for a while before raising it again. That was the funny thing about Vinton...although a very small town, there were lots of bars there considering the population. Being the first town across the Texas border had its advantages.

I was in John's Barn one night, after hours so 4:00 maybe 1983?, talking to the bartender, he wore glasses but the temples had broke so he just had a rubber bands holding his glasses on, and while I was talking to him a fight broke out at the pool tables and he reached under the bar and pulled out a sawed off shot gun and leaped over the bar to break it up. No shite!

Well John's Barn used to be a LCPD hangout...that's how I found out about it...never felt safer!

I was really enjoying this thread then it seemed to fizzle out. Are there any other Lake Charles forums or threads out there, it's been great remembering my old hometown and days past like this?
