Lafayette, IN mother arrested after son tossed from hood of car

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Dec. 11, 2015)– A Lafayette mother was arrested after police say she accelerated her vehicle and hit the car brakes, sending her son who was on the hood of the car to the ground.

Kathleen Smith, 55, was preliminarily arrested on endangering a dependent’s life and criminal recklessness.

Police say Smith was dropping her 12-year-old son off at Sunnyside Middle School, but the boy refused to get out of the car. A struggle ensued to remove him from the vehicle. The boy then jumped on the hood of the car, said police.

Smith allegedly accelerated approximately 65 feet before hitting brakes, causing the boy to hit the ground. Lafayette Police say the boy was not injured in the incident.

Police say Smith left the scene. She was arrested by officers at her home.
