I imagine they're shocked as hell about losing both.

Regardless it's the family I feel for. But this tragedy happens every day somewhere in the country, and IRS equally as tragic.

O.K., what did I just see?

Looks like he just took off without further communication!

Last thing I heard was you’re too low for me to pick up on radar

A video from someone’s phone that my wife showed me might indicate they hit the side of a mountain, rolled down quite a ways, then exploded

Did look like a controlled flight into terrain.

But all movements matched audio until very end. Then movement started going quickly down and to the right with no audio response to tower.

I'd love to know why that travel took place.

He was being handed off from responsible ATC to next responsible air traffic control agency... he consistantly said he was vfr at 1500 feet while surface observations were 1100 foot ceilings and 2&1/2 miles visibility. Last atc he talked to was trying to flight follow him but he was too low for radar contact and had radio interference from terrain. Last controller never established radar contact or voice. Sounds like they were using roads and interstates to vector him around the airports. Old joke is IFR stands for I follow roads,. He should have not been special vfr if he was in the clouds

No. I don't understand the pilot's sudden movement without permission/direction from tower.

I was grunt during service time.

Firefighter in civilian life amongst other things.

That's what I'm axin. What I see on radar doesn't match what had happened previously. The last movement didn't appear to be authorized or understood by tower. Chopper was moving and not talking.

and I stand by my statement, you've got no clue as to what goes on in the takeoff/landing phase of our operation, which is the only time you'll see us, 13 weeks under your belt and you're an aviation expert, hah!

He was probably in and out of the clouds, the ceilings were low. I dont know what the terrain height is around those airports but it looks hilly and the sectional chart shows obstructions over 1000 feet altitude in the area. I dont know what his company minimums are so I dunno if he was skating the rules but if I was a betting man I'd say vfr into ifr conditions with low altitude, low visibility and rising terrain.
