re: Kids in their 20's, what is the biggest mistake your parents made with you

That reminded me of this Jack Handy gem:
quote:
"One thing kids like is to be tricked. For instance, I was going to take my nephew to Disneyland, but instead I drove him to an old burned-out warehouse. 'Oh no,' I said, 'Disneyland burned down.' "He cried and cried, but I think that deep down he thought it was a pretty good joke. 'I started to drive over to the real Disneyland, but it was getting pretty late."

They drive all the way to Orlando. Walk to the gates and as the dad was about to pay for the family to get in, he looks at his son and says, nah you're an a-hole we're going home.
Drove all the way back to LA on the spot.
I don't doubt that he told you this story, but I have a hard time believing it.
Dad drives 12 hrs to DW. When he gets to the gate, he says just kidding. Then drives back home for 12 hrs.

Yes that's the story. Nothing surprises me anymore so I don't know why this isn't believable. This wasn't the most stable of families. The kid was a psycho along with the dad.
And the story was told to me by a person that had no reason to lie.
I'm talking about a father/son relationship that involved fistfights

Most of my friends were 1-4 years older than me and were very responsible. I hardly ever or never fricked up anything. In return my parents let me do w/e I wanted, like stay up as long as I wanted, go to different cities with my friends etc.
By 12 I was acting like most 17/18 year olds when it came to responsibility. Tell your son to stop being a pussy, my parents regretted no giving my older sibling more freedom. Freedoms based on responsibility and maturity.

And aren't you the guy who was on here asking how to beat drug tests because you were doing drugs before a job interview?

I was being conservative with 12 hrs...that's basically only stopping enough to fuel up and use the bathroom. Do you really buy that someone would be willing to drive for over 24 hrs, for no reason, just to be a dick?

O yeah, my dad made me mow the lawn when I was like 10 which no one did in our neighborhood. After I started more kids did. Parents asked me how I felt about it, and I said its easy we have a self propelled mower, I just hold the handle it goes. almost like walking a dog. Did my own homework, made good grades, never talked back, damn I was a perfect kid

I'm guessing that you're still younger than 17/18.

Yes.
The reason was to be a dick and to get back at the a-hole son for embarrassing him. Its fricked up but knowing these people, it didn't come as some big shock. People do messed up things all the time. This was just one of those things

Ok so don't talk about responsibility. If I remember correctly, your mom got you the job opportunity. Yea you sure showed a lot of responsibility.
What's wrong is that its illegal. I don't agree with the laws but that doesn't matter.

I wasn't trying to offend you, sorry. We can agree to disagree.

You just can't make this shite up.

Kids are not stamped out like a cookie, they are all different and thus need to be handled in different ways.
I have a 15 year old son and a 10 year old daughter <---(prayers)
The boy is self motivated to do his very best in order to get out of the Podunk town we live in.
He has a 4.0, takes advanced classes, goes with my wife to work during the summer to talk to the anesthesiologists (that's what he wants to be). He drove my truck 6 miles last week and for the first time he looked like he didn't have a stick in his arse.
I tell him my main concern (in a joking fashion) is that he listens to electronic music and is going to become a hipster neckbeard. He has to be knocked down a peg every once in awhile when he gets a little to snotty and the thing that works best on him is manual labor. He already mows but I add weeding the garden and the flower beds, cleaning up the ditches and sweeping out the garage. This also gets him off that damn phone for a little while also.
The girl is a different animal completely. I thought little girls were supposed to be neat, she is the messiest little bag lady hoarder I've ever seen. It's a constant struggle getting her to keep her room clean. She does good in school but I also believe she is a little immature but just being 10 that's not a huge concern right now. She's still daddy's little girl and I'll let some stuff slide for the time being. She does do the dishes and does a good little job. Taking away her TV is her kryptonite, if she can't watch the murder channel and the food network it's like you shot her.
All in all people have said it plenty, just spend time with them and be involved but not smothering.
My parents were good about this to the point that later on in life they said I could have done a lot more stuff but I didn't ask for fear of being told no. So kids ask, you never know how much confidence your parents have in you because sometimes it's hard to show it if you don't ask to do stuff.

Hey man he might be listening to some good music.

We had a bonding moment. Listening to Octane and one if his electronic peeps (Lindsey Stringfield I think) did a song with Lizzie Hale. We were like hey we each know who one if these people are.
he's a good kid though. I think I'm just going to let my wife and daughter duke it out in 5 years or so and stay out of it

Good idea on that last part

Also I think it's a good idea to take note of your childs interest and then involve them with you on an adult level (depending on age of course) My son is really into film and about twice a month we will have movie night with me, my wife, and him. It's really fun and it opens them up to discussing not only the movie but other things. We recently marathoned all of Breaking Bad together and that was awesome. quoting him "I now understand how all these rednecks are blowing themselves up".
