The first time I ever had a kidney stone, which was 3 or 4 years ago, I went to the doctor, not really sure what it was. It turned out to be kidney stones and I was prescribed something to break them up. I have heard horror stories about kidney stones, but fortunately, I guess they broke up and was really small because I passed them. I felt it, there was a trace of blood, but I wasn't in the pain I was in when I went to the doctor.
Fast forward a few months ago, I noticed something was off, side sort of hurting but it wasn't bad. The next day I passed one, same thing.. I felt it, there was a trace of blood, but it wasn't that bad. I have been extremely fortunate with that because like I said, I have heard horror stories.
A few years ago a friend of mine ended up in the ER. He had to call someone to come pick him up and drive him.. In 48 hrs he made 2 visits to the ER. He said he was in tears and it was the worst pain he ever felt so I have actually been kind of scared of them. I have a relatively high tolerance for pain.. depending on the type of pain, but I do not want to deal with the pain I have heard others say they dealt with involving kidney stones.

I haven’t passed this evil from my body yet. Pain is no longer high in the right side of my back but now in the lower left side and more manageable. Hoping to exorcise this demon soon.

How do you baws pass a kidney stone?? Looking for some help here from you seasoned kidney stone passers to get this thing out!
"Flank pains" - it sounds like this is what sent you to the ER. The stone descending from the kidneys to the bladder via the ureter is almost always the terrible part. The part that made your WWII vet Paw Paw say things like "I was at D-Day and took shrapnel, but the only time I ever cried like a baby was when I had a kidney stone". Thankfully, once this part is over, it's over.
Perhaps counter-intuitively, the peeing out of the stone (that is, the stone moving from the bladder, down the urethra, and out the pee hole) is rather anti-climactic and more of a pain in the arse, than an actual pain.
For me, I've passed about 5 now over the years. I (extremely luckily) only felt flank pains in 2 of them. The others somehow got to the bladder unannounced. For me, they seem to linger in the bladder for up to 3 weeks. My most recent one - last summer - was a 7mm ball of joy that lingered in the bladder for 15 days.
When the stone is in the bladder, you will likely feel "referred pain/sensations" whenever it flirts with the urethral opening. For me, this is very mild pain, registered at the glans (tip) or a vibrating/buzzing (almost like the phantom cell phone effect in your pocket), mostly at the glans, but sometimes on the shaft. Again, very little real pain associated with this.
When the stone gets in the urethra and starts moving down, that's when you can start actively managing things, although this can take days too. What you want to be looking for is when the stone obviously gets into the tip and is very close to coming out. At that point, you should be able to lightly squeeze and detect exactly where it is. (I said LIGHTLY.)
It's at this point that I usually attempt the "break the dam" strategy. As you go to bed, drink a huge thing of decaf with a shot of bourbon it. The goal is to sleep and let the dam (pee) build up. When you wake up having to go really bad, DON'T GO! Instead, pound a beer or two.
Wait a couple of hours, and then go. Get the sieve, put it in the toilet, and pee the sucker out. You will likely be shocked at how much of a non-event this is. Relieving the pee will be a much bigger effect than the actual stone moving through.
Good luck!

I've had several of them. Thank God I haven't had one in over 10 years. The ER used to give dilaudid or demerol through an IV. Send you home with pain meds and told to drink plenty of fluids. The last one I had they gave me dilaudid at the ER and flomax and percocet to go home with. I was fortunate I was able to pass them all at home.
As someone mentioned earlier in this thread a Toradol shot worked the best as far as the pain goes. But only the shot worked, the Toradol pills didn't help me at all. Obviously you need to drink plenty of water or, and these are words to live by, drink enough beer until you pee clear.
Good luck!

You might want to start taking cranberry pills. I've had kidney stones 3 times and began taking the pills after the last event. It's been 10 years since I've had a relapse.
