You do realize this is just residency and most want to return to LA after that? Most like the idea of moving away for 3-5 years for some things new and then returning to work

This

Doing residency in Louisiana doesn't mean anything

Most Louisianians I graduated with and those who matched yesterday plant to return to Louisiana after a few year break of training elsewhere.

Doing residency in Louisiana does not equal "staying in Louisiana"

But there are different marks

Are you trying to match dermatology? Then matching at LSU is probably where you just ended up

Where as doing internal medicine? You have much more choices of where you can go. So you can definitely "pick to leave"

There's a reason for that. But I don't want to get banned. Let's just say Tulane was "taken over" in the 70's.

Perfectly fine for them to go to residency outside the state. The question is how many practice in the state. I'm sure it still isn't a pretty picture.

Sixty-eight percent of doctors who complete all their training in one state end up practicing there

I was reading through to see if someone posted this stat. I often see it quoted as a percent that practice within 100 miles of where they did residency and it was also upwards of 70%

After attending medical school in Louisiana wouldn't doing a residency away from LA give you a different perspective on your specialty

Yes and no. Yes- you learn the specialty during residency from the ground up. Then you are board certified yourself. Problem is, now you only know the New York/California/Ohio way of doing things, so you stay in New York/California/Ohio because it's much easier to treat the population you spent 3-7 years learning to treat in the system that taught you how to do it.

Every set of numbers I've seen show most everyone practicing near where they trained. Part of that is probably because people like to train where they're from, but it would be quite difficult to go into some areas with training from a different place. For instance, let's say Procedure X is kind of in between Fields A and B in terms of who does it a lot. If you train in Field B where you don't do procedure X because all the Field A guys do it, you don't set up shop in a town where there aren't any Field A guys around, but you're still expected to do Procedure X.
