I agree with most of what you say, but $200 is big money to someone making minimum wage. It hurts a lot.

I have the most difficulty reconciling with those who can, but don't work. I don't think they should get a free ride.

You will be excoriated for agreeing with me (though you are correct).

A broken clock is right twice a day.

ETA: And my point is more to help lower earners than harm higher earners. I remember a speeding ticket was a freaking killer while I was commuting for college all the time. Now I pay them without a second thought. Those fines can be steep if living paycheck to paycheck.

Question dear, since a jobless person has vastly more free time than someone who is working 60hrs a week shouldn't he get far more community service hours for the same crime in your view? It would only be fair?

We do not often agree here, but damn, after this salvo you should....

That would be a fair compromise, though the poor don't work fewer hours than the middle class. That is a myth (though with giant corporations dodging benefits by using part-time, it is less true than it used to be).

So for say a workhorse lawyer who bills 70 hours a week can pick up trash for 30 minutes and the unemployed broke man should pick up trash for 16 hours for the same offense? That would only be fair and progressive as they have a vastly disproportionate amouts of free time..

Lawyers should have to do extra community service it would do them good. Sabi needs something to do on weekends.

It would do someone who could work but didn't a lot of good to go out and pick up a lot of trash.

I'm not against work. My sympathies are towards the working poor, not those who can but don't work.

There was a small town in Alabama a few years ago, Harpersville, that had their city government disbanded and taken over by the state because they were running a debtors prison. It's always been a notorious speed trap on Hwy 280, within about a mile stretch on the Hwy the speed limit drops 3-4 different times a total of 20-25 mph. Their courts and jail were privatized and run by the same company and they handed out much higher than average traffic tickets and instead of working with people to pay off their fines they would just increase them if you were late and people were getting locked up over it.

I volunteer constantly. Why would you try to ruin my good name? I'm so hurt. I thought you were different...

Truth. That company that was running that scam is now out of AL. They are in other states though. Still cannot believe no one has been jailed over that case.

Privatizing the criminal justice, or any part of it, really is somewhat evil.

You used to be mean to me.

The same people who were mean on the political board are often nice on the OT.

I try to stay away from the political board.
