This/\. I see these types at just about every major intersection in N.O.
They have cell phones and smoking their cigarettes and even worse are the ones that tie a dog up to a post to be with them during their panhandling stint.
If you are truly homeless and resorting to begging on the streets, don't drag an animal into your situation and give up your smoking habit.

there's one on brightside at the gas station that only panhandles in the morning dresses nice and looks like he works out, so his story is mildly believable until he gives you the exact same story another time . same dollar amount and everything.

Yep, in NC right now, in a nice area. Driving to the intersection of the main drag and where I’m going to each day there are young, well groomed, “homeless “ guys out there panhandling. They’ve got nice clothes on and North Face backpacks. Might be some sort of initiation.

I bet the parka was to cover arm tats or drug tracts.
Either way, Salt Lake has a HUGE homeless and panhandler problem.
The same couple have worked/panhandles the 2 entrances of our neighborhood grocery for 4 years straight. They live 1 block away.
Young panhandlers in our area are mostly runaway heroin addicts.
The truly homeless folks are usually NOT the panhandlers. They are mostly mentally ill.
It's not like the average OT baller just being down on luck for a short spell.
It is a super difficult problem. If great minds could solve the problem, it would be fixed already.

The irony of this situation is that he really isn't lazy. He obviously lacks ambition, but standing on the side of the road in the heat for 4 to 8 hours a day is not easy. They could actually work in a fast food place, in the AC, and make the same money.
I think most of them (I'm talking legitimately homeless people) are either addicts, vets with PTSD, or otherwise mentally ill.

A job is a reputable thing to have. Begging should be embarrassing.
