I've ridden horses a good bit and been around people riding horses, and I have never heard this or seen someone get up with grabbing the horn, or some place close to it. Most people I have seen grab the horn and the cantle.

I grew up riding. I was taught to never do it. My grandfather didn't even like you getting lazy and resting your hands on the saddle horn when holding the reins. I was also taught that you can use your right hand to balance on the cantle if you have to when stepping up, but taught not to grab it, as well.
