Note: This week, because the Battle of Midway looms so large, World War Two is doing a special three-episode presentation regarding the week of June 5, 1942. Yesterday they released part one of their two-part special on the Battle of Midway. Today they are releasing a video about the goings-on in North Africa and the Eastern Front during that same period.

quote:

Midway isn't the only fight right now. Germany is trying to crack the mighty fortress of Sevastopol and take the whole of Crimea. In North Africa, Rommel is routing the Allies, but in Malta the arrival of ever more fighter planes bodes well for the Allies.

Zealots yes, but badass militarily? Not so much in the beginning for certain. They were well known to throw themselves into battles wildly and without thought to life and limb, which made them more akin to radical nut jobs than having any military genius behind their actions.

True, and I think eventually everyone within the Wehrmacht was at one point. Crazed meth heads, the lot.

I think that's right. I remember they were pretty drugged up.

I suppose enough will make anyone fearless.

Here’s some meth. Take a hit and pass it on.

I saw a documentary recently where someone showed actual bottle of Pervitin they passed out to soldiers.

They had no idea what it was of course, but just that they could finally be the master race on the battlefield that they were told they always were.

They absolutely were. Say what you will about the SS and German ground troops in general, but they were miles ahead of American troops. We had superior airpower and our artillery was incredibly better in quality and quantity but German soldiers were far better trained and equipped than US soldiers.

Factually incorrect. You are simply misinformed on this subject.

German training was longer and more intensive. They didn't get nearly as much food and suffered mightily in logistics as the war worsened for them but their soldiers had better tanks, machine guns, small unit tactics training and discipline under fire. That's just a fact.

The regular army was, but the SS and SAS was initially comprised of a bunch of street thugs without much in the line of actual military expertise. They were just radicalized and sold out to the Nazi propaganda, mindless robots. That’s certainly not to take away from the German military machine in the least. They were a very formidable force to be reckoned with and way ahead of their time technologically and in more modernized military tactics, especially in regard to mechanized units, but they also overstretched themselves when they took on Russia especially, which proved to be the beginning of their downfall in going after the oil fields instead of staying on mission. That was Hitler’s big FU.

SS are sooo overrated.

Well-supplied fanatics. Sure, any unit is crack if they always have food, water, ammo, gas etc.

This is all very subjective and not particularly accurate - especially by the end of the war.

A brilliant historian, however Hastings is a huge British nationalist and likes to inflate German capabilities so that Britain's military can pump its chest all the more harder.

It may be true for their elite units. But while most Allied units got basically the same gear and training, that wasn't the case for the German Army. Politically connected or special units got the best stuff that was State of the art. But many mainline units were neglected and even stripped of gear. The guys defending Normandy were a bunch of provincial conscripts who didn't have ammunition or fuel to train properly. Not to mention a complete absence of motivated officers.

The German Army was grossly overstretched. To say they had better training and equipment across the board when we did is simply laughable.
