Ranked by many historians as one of the most important naval battles in world history, as well as considered by all to be the turning point of the War in the Pacific, the Battle of Midway is celebrating its 75th anniversary. Hard to believe that the Japanese lost all of their momentum a mere six months after the opening of hostilities.

The unsung heros of the battle were the Torpedo squadrons. Without them, we'd have never won the battle despite the fact they didnt land one blow and were all but annihilated in the process.

There's a great book about Midway titled Sole Survivor by then Ensign George Gay. He was the only surviving member of VT-8, flying TBDs off of the Hornet. All 15 Devastators of Torpedo 8 were shot down and Gay was the only survivor out of 30 men. Torpedo 8 attacked early in the battle, so he witnessed three Japanese carriers being sunk. He was rescued the next day.

The primary advantage was out ability to read their confidential transmissions. The big man upstairs was with us during those fateful days
