Days after a critical water line broke and rendered hundreds of thousands of residents and businesses on the east bank of Jefferson Parish without water, a second pipe broke, sending water onto another section of Jefferson Highway.

It was "not a significant break" and is unrelated to the break on Tuesday, said Rachel Strassel, a spokesperson for Jefferson Parish.

The second break happened near Jefferson Highway and Edwards Avenue, near the Red White and Blue thrift store, more than two miles down Jefferson Highway from the earlier break.

Residents and businesses in the 5600 and 5700 blocks of Jefferson Highway will be without water for 5-6 hours while repairs are made and one lane of Jefferson Highway will be closed.

"This repair will not impact pressure parish-wide, nor will it affect ongoing efforts to rescind the boil water advisory once samples collected by the Water Department on Wednesday (January 24) have been analyzed to determine whether the water meets potable water standards," Strassel said in a statement.

Jefferson Parish council member Scott Walker said in a statement on social media the water department told him the leak would not impact pressure for everyone.

"Pipes burst every day across the parish," he said.

In 2021, Jefferson Parish Council approved incremental increases to water and sewerage bills over next 20 years to pay for $2.3 billion in much needed improvements to the parish's aging sewage and water infrastructure.

It happens all the time...nothing to see here

They had been doing work around there, wonder if that had anything to do with it..

Probably won't affect the whole Eastbank though..
