John Oliver rips into the timeshare industry

I know two things about the timeshare industry.

1) There are people that will spend a full day of their vacation attending a sales pitch for timeshares so they can get a coupon for a free meal afterwards.

2) People that purchase a timeshare soon regret the decision and spend multiple years trying to get out of it.

There’s a reason you can buy timeshares on eBay for $1

They have to be the worst financial purchase you can make, and I feel awful that my grandparents own two of them and my dad has one he inherited from his mother.

I have sat through one in Mexico for some free shite. And I made the guy’s time with me miserable. I told him straight up why I was there and he kept trying and eventually gave up and handed me the voucher for my free stuff. I probably still wouldn’t sit through another one.

If you are still falling for timeshares in this day and age then you need to be separated from your money.

I "won" a prize at Zurich one year and my prize was at a hotel downtown, Low and behold, it was a timeshare shingding. I sat there through it all, did the walk, everything. This good looking sales lady precedes with her pitch and I just nodded. She started talking about what a great investment and shite and I finally asked "so can I borrow against it?". She looks at me and asked if I was an accountant. Nope, then she showed me how much it was. I busted out laughing. $1,100/month for 10 years!!! She tells me that's three weeks of vacation paid for. I just laughed and got my voucher and left.
