ow I handle such a situation is I stand up in front of my class and do my job; teach. I don't give a damn what the audience looks like. They could all be purple and it wouldn't bother me. What bothers me is having to write some bullshite like this. It's not my job as a professor or the universities job to promote/teach diversity. Their job is to educate so that students won't be a bunch of incompetent dumb fricks when they graduate.

I hear ya. I've taught in different parts of the country and I wasn't successful when I tried to use the same teaching approach on all students. It's just my experience, but you may have better luck.

If you want the job, the first step is at least pretending that writing things like diversity statements doesn't raise your ire.

Talk about your experiences with diverse people.

If you have taught in a diverse classroom environment, talk about those experiences.

Basically, prove to them that you can teach individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds.

I'm in agriculture, there's not a lot of diversity. The students are 99% European American, mid to upper class, who either grew up on a farm or are trying to get into vet school.

I wrote a black kid up at school the other day for calling another black kid the N-word. That's my multicultural contribution for the week.

Real diversity transcends race. You can have a diverse group of whites or a group of like-minded people from similar backgrounds and interests who are of different races.

I would just leave race out of it and mention how you see the value of having people with different points of view and backgrounds.

Come on, we all know this has nothing to do with people from different backgrounds and everything to do with race.

Type that up, and turn it in. Then keep looking. You know, and we know, you are not the person they are looking for.

As if diversity of ethnicity doesn't bring diversity in ideas

What is so wrong with diversity.

Why are you all so scared of it?

I hate initiatives like the Rooney Rule in the NFL because it forces teams to interview black and minorities candidates.

Key word is forces. I hate the fact that we can even trust the powers to search wide and far for the best candidate.

It's more damning of the old guard and their stubborn and segregationist ways than of the candidates

I think the Rooney rule exists because of people like you. I think if an NFL owner thinks someone is going to win, they don't care what they look like. Bringing in a token candidate just to satisfy a quota doesn't change anything.

Really? Tell that to all 7 minority head coaches that had held that title until the rule was implemented in 2003.

The NBA has largely escaped the race peoblems the NFL had, at all levels.

That thought had crossed my mind. Would be interesting to see if they actually read this stuff. This is the same university I interviewed at in October.
