Why did the subject in photographs always turn their heads away from the camera back then?

Photographer was over on the side havin’ a wack at it. Times were hard, back before internet. You couldn’t let a supermodel in a Pocahontas costume come in your studio and NOT have a tug at it. Models just turned a blind eye to it.
