There was a plan in late 2011 for a 30k seat on campus stadium and the board wouldn't even look at it officially in a meeting and basically told the UAB president frick you. 15 million of the projected 75 million cost was already covered rather quickly.
That president "resigned" the next year and now we have Watts.

I don't see where UAB can afford to build a stadium. Maybe the city brings the talks back for a dome and they lease it to UAB for home games.

The UAB SGAs, UAB Faculty Senate, UAB alumni society all want Watts out and have voted no confidence. The board of trustees are the only people who can remove Watts and they are on record saying they fully back his decisions. The governor is also on the board. You figure that one out.

The SACS ethics bill passed. The other 2 did not make it out as far as I know.
But the 2nd bill (HB340) that proposed restructuring of the UA system board of trustees.. failed to pass.
And the 3rd bill (HB341) to reinstate UAB football also failed to pass.
I can't help but laugh at Jack Williams "jihad" movement to #FREEUAB!

Only one battle in a long war :)

quote:Well they at least got the easiest bill of the three to pass I guess. Requiring all public colleges and universities BOT's to attend annual SACS ethics isn't a bad thing for Alabama/Auburn/Troy, etc. And Lord knows Alabama State and their corrupt representatives need ethics training in the worst way.

Nor do I. I don't think Bham should build a dome. I don't think we're at that level yet. It'd make more sense than splitting the costs of a small football stadium though. Let's say they do build a dome, I don't think it'd be best for UAB to play there. The optics of the program would barely change. UAB really needs something of their own. If the BOT are allowing them to return, then they need to bite the bullet and help with a stadium.
Kind of a shitty situation all the way around.

Amen and have an upvote sir.

No joke. That's a cesspool.

No way in hell is B'ham building a dome stadium because no way in hell B'ham is getting an NFL team. The market is already saturated with Nashville, Atlanta and New Orleans. I do think there is a way a partnership could be built between UAB and the area high schools to build a stadium. I wish USA would do this too.

Yep, the SACS ethic training was a good one regardless of anyone's thoughts on UAB football. We need more accountability.

This whole shite show has been a disaster from the beginning. I agree that UAB if they get the football program back has basically been dealt the equivalent of the death penalty. If big time commitments are not made where will this be in 5 years? If they are going to bring it back UAB needs a commitment fora 30,000 seat stadium on campus. But I seriously doubt that ever happens.

The push is for a "small" dome stadium that would seat 50K. I don't know of anything else like that out there though. Most people know we aren't going to get an NFL team but I don't get the need for something larger than a basketball arena. Maybe someone can give me an example of a city that gets a lot of use out a dome/arena hybrid.

The boat sialed a long time ago for Birmingham to land an NFL team I don't know why you would build a hybrid dome/arena when you have BJCC and UAB's arena.
If UAB is getting a stadium, it should be something, downtown, on campus that could also be somehat dual use. A good example would be like what Baylor did

I will admit its been awhile...I thought they renovated all of that sometime ago?

It's been a while since I've been as well. But it was a dump a few years ago. They should implode it and Boutwell when they start working on 20/59 through downtown.

Yeah. Even if Bham had the market size, I don't see NFL coming here. Everyone is too fixated on CFB.
You have to do these things in steps. The first step was a baseball field downtown. The second will be a basketball arena that could hopefully attract the NCAAT, possibly the SECT, and other events. This will get laughed at but I think with the way things have improved in Bham over the last few years, Bham will be an NBA *caliber* town in the next few years if things continue to progress. That doesn't mean we'll get one, but I think we'll be at or around that level. In any event, we won't be at that level if we don't have a first class arena. The BJCC is a dump.

It's been 15 years since I have lived in B'ham but I thought they spent a lot of money on the BJCC complex recently and put a new hotel down there?
I am suprised that Boutwell is still standing...are they fixing the interchange down there?

Sadly,I think the ship has sailed for the BJCC. They still get conventions and such, but they last hosted the NCAA first round tourney in 2008. Very unlikely the NCAA comes back.
They have 'fixed it up' but remember it was built in 1976. There's really no way they can build really nice suites (although there are a few) and the concourse is way too small.
