I think bullies get a bad rap.
Bullies prey on weakness, maybe from an innate place of insecurity, but weakness nonetheless.
If we completely take the bullies out of life when kids are young, if we rob them of that experience, if we sanitize and stifle all those learning moments when they are discovering how to cope with the real world, we are doing them a disservice.
Think about it. Bullies are the lions of the adolescent Serengeti. They feed on the weak and the awkward and tear them down. And those that bear the brunt of it can either learn how to handle it, how to strike back, how to deal with this ugly fact of life...or they just take it. But like it or not it’s an experience of youth that teaches a lesson.
Whether the lesson is that weakness will be preyed upon. Or that you sometimes need to stand up for others weaker than you. Or just that sometimes life is a big ‘ol dick.
If you try to remove the generic bully and avoid the cold truth, a far more sinister bully will rear it’s head. The one of real life.
If kids don’t learn how to cope when they are kids, how are they supposed to react as adults?
