No reason to despise God, liz. But as a Catholic who was brought up in a staunchly Catholic family in the 50s and 60s; who did 16 years of Catholic education; and once studied to be a Christian Brother, I am more offended by those who tell others who and who is not saved. No one walking the earth today can make that decision. My guess, is that many "well intentioned" zealots are going to be very surprised by who they bump into in Heaven (I am hoping that a Heaven exists).

I was just thinking, if we both went to heaven, would you recognize me as Festus, or my IRL name?

Fes, I am guessing that we all get in.

I don't know whether we will know one another by IRL or Board names. But I will recognize you from the pics you posted yesterday.

Agreed. God wants good people, no matter where they are from.

Yep, Iona, we are kindred spirits. Religion is a cultural aspect of humanity.

I am guessing that there aren't many on here who remember that.

If there is a god, do you think he really cares if you denounce him to save yourself? If he really loved you enough to die for you, you'd think he'd understand that you don't mean it.

Not trying to be a bitch here, but this seems very arrogant. What makes you think these people need your brand of saving? Because YOU believe in it? Your lack of humility is strange to me and cramming your beliefs down people's throats, well, I can't sympathize.

Didn't really work out like you planned.

Yes He would very much care.

I realize you likely don't believe in God. But what kind of Christian am I if I would willingly throw away my faith (when I believe in eternal salvation) to spend a few more years on Earth?

You wouldn't be throwing away your faith. Words don't have meaning unless you assign them meaning. I have trouble believing God would want you to die over words.

ETA: I definitely don't believe in the Catholic perception of God. That God seems very petty.

You are my friend, but do you really believe that billions of people that live good lives on the planet have no chance at salvation because they were born in a place where Christianity doesn't exist?

But it would. As a Christian you are called to never deny your faith. No matter what. Being a Christian means you are willing to die for your faith if necessary.

This doesn't mean you go out killing people and yourself in the name of "faith", but that you value your faith over everything .....including your life on Earth. Cause if you have faith, you know where you are going when you die anyways.

That's the part that I find the most disturbing in the whole night are scenario. The shite he said about the country is forgivable with the hell I imagine he'd been put through.

But my faith is what I would have to lean on most to get to that point. I don't know if I could give that away. Knowing the reward awaiting. So very sad. So very, very sad.

I pray his family has some little bit of serenity tonight... And I hope the murderers end up on the wrong end of some smart bomb.

Well, I do have to say that the Catholic Church has come a long way from preaching about the scary God I learned about in the 50s and early 60s. There is more emphasis on God's Mercy than His Judgment, which is much more in line with a Loving Father.

I went to confession a few weeks ago, simply to keep a promise I made to my Mother. I told the priest that as far as I was concerned, had I gotten killed by an 18 wheeler on my way to church or on my way home, I'd be judged the same way - if there is a God. I want to believe, but I have my doubts. I told the priest that I didn't think I was a good Catholic, but I wasn't a bad Christian.
