I think it’s a reach to attempt to make one positive and the other negative.

I think this goes further than semantics.

Patriotism - "I love LSU football and support them thru thick and thin"

Nationalism - "I love LSU football and your team sucks and you will never beat us"

This is true, whether that bond is love or hate it is still a strong connection.

Im pretty sure the most likely person to kill you is your spouse statistically.

Maybe. I imagine it depends on one’s demographic/age/sex but maybe.

What’s definitely true is that historically speaking, fear/hatred of “the others” is responsible for way more deaths than murder by spouse or even proximate family and friends. It’s not even close.

historically speaking wouldn't the people nearest to you also be more likely to be related to you (aka family)?

if 2 Gaulic tribes went to war odds were they were extended family. happened way more often than some Germanic tribe going to war with a clan in Japan.

not sure the total death toll compares though with more modern war numbers. the Taiping rebellion death total was around 20+ million.

It’s a more innocent concept that doesn’t include imperialism and conquest.

It’s ok to take pride in your country and come to it’s defense against those who do wish to do harm to it. This is patriotism.

It’s not ok to want your country to invade, control, dominate, and subjugate the less powerful nations around it. (Like what Russia is doing to Ukraine right now) This is nationalism.

So you are basing your entire position on an essay written by George Orwell in 1945?

The etymology of patriotism is based off of loving the “father land”

The etymology of nationalism is based off of loving the “land of one’s birth”

You can have both. They are not in conflict.

Like I said, drivel.

IMO, being blood doesn’t necessarily make you family (which is why I said “proximate family”).

And those were definitely not family members killing each other.

Lol Lousiana would be amazing without the people.

This is bullshite. Louisiana wouldn't be what it is without the people.

I think what you mean is LA would be amazing without shitty leadership.

And sure the people take some responsibility in that, but it's a weird dichotomy in that what makes LA culture so great is also its downfall in certain aspects.
