If he even vaguely resembles his avi, the hunger strike might take years to be effective.

I like food too much to go on a hunger strike. I could see myself going on a McDonald's strike though. Maybe that'll get some attention

Your best bet is to start writing and calling your legislators. Hopefully find one on what's called the Joint Legislative Budget Committee. It's no guarantee that anything will happen but at least be heard by the people allocating all that money.

The only other way I'd see getting additional faculty is to become a fundraiser and somehow get a position endowed somehow. Figure out who went to your school and majored in your college and has wound up successful in life and get them to chip in for a position the university doesn't have to pay for all by itself.
I can do both of these relatively easily, but it is my understanding that the money is in the university....it was just taken from my college and given to others. Plus, I don't want the state giving more money to the school that won't go to my college anyway. I'm not gonna put in the effort so the film school can get a new dark room.

I didn't want to start calling people outside of the school until I had exhausted all possible avenues within the school.

What do professors get paid anyway?

This.

It's a proven technique.

I seriously doubt there is all that much money in the humanities departments at LSU. It's frankly embarrassing for a flagship institution.

Regardless, the institutional focus of LSU is research, not teaching, so even if you could somehow get funds moved from one department to another (which is usually a political situation) I'd imagine tenured faculty would scream for it to be used for their research rather than opening up classes. Even then the funds would more than likely go to adjunct professors, as the instructor level position at most universities has been absolutely obliterated.

so, your plan is to make an appointment with the provost to see if you can get him to cancel the English curriculum?....

Plan is to get him to get the money from somewhere. If I were running a university, I'd sure as frick would rather be known for producing good engineers than people who can read Tuesdays with Morrie faster than normal. That is especially important considering the industries around here

LSU is a research university. They'd rather be known for cutting edge research than producing good engineers. From the way it sounds, it appears as if this is a political situation within a college, and those situations can be especially vicious. Any change you could possibly make would happen at least one year down the road. Good luck regardless.
