I’ll always be blown away by how popular that movie/show is. They made us watch the movie in high school and it was beyond the highest levels of cringe I could imagine. It was deeply uncomfortable and upsetting.

That “find the fish” scene made my skin crawl.

The phrase "your mother was a hamster" is meant to be absurd and ridiculous, playing on the idea that hamsters are prolific breeders. By comparing someone's mother to a hamster, the Insulting Frenchman is implying that she was promiscuous or sexually active. This interpretation is supported by the second part of the insult, "your father smells of elderberries", which suggests that the father was a drunkard. Historically, elderberries were used to make wine or other alcoholic beverages, so the mention of elderberries reinforces the idea of excessive drinking or drunkenness associated with the father.

This is my point - it's not nearly as clever as everyone says it is.

They have always been very high brow, low brow humor. There is a surprisingly large amount of depth and thought behind their fart jokes, it's why they are so good.

My interpretation is in line with that 90%, only difference being he got drunk and fricked a hamster. I guess to be an "aficionado" you must accept an official specific interpretation of why you laughed at it supported by "a blog for pet lovers that has a team of dedicated specialists providing detailed information on pet health, diet, and training tips?"

I mean this in the kindest gentlest way Roger, but frick off with your joke professor bit.

Its amazing how being wrong pushes small people over the ledge.

Youre taking this shite way too personal, bucko. Might lessen up on the pain pills.

I'm laughing and fricking with you in a pretty light-hearted manner about how silly it is to tell people they laughed at a joke for the wrong reason and you respond by implying I'm a pill junkie while saying I'm the one taking it personal?

Youre literally upset because your version of a monty python joke is wrong and lashing out over that. Think about that for a moment.

Thats petty as frick. You can stay in the wrong, and proud of it. Seems on brand.

Oh for fricks sake. You're the only one mad here, Ricky. I simply said "I always thought the joke was.....," and you respond with a link from a hamster veterinarian in Texas to 'prove me wrong' and accuse me of using pills out of nowhere. Get over yourself.

Monty Python found a way to use copious booze and drugs to find the middle ground between lowbrow and highbrow humor.

Thats the best ive seen it explained. Its definitely not for everyone. But The Holy Grail is my most watched movie and it seems I pick up on new stuff every time I watch. Its packed full of little goodies. The subtleness of the humor is awesome.

The Holy Grail is the greatest "anti movie" ever made. Nothing is reverent, and the process is mocked throughout.
