That's the problem, but what's the solution?

Until the black illegitimacy rate drops from 72% to something somewhat reasonable, we can throw tax money at the situation forever and change nothing (as we have been).

To many kids, too few parents, and poor public role models.

Remove safety net, end the war on drugs and the lower 20% would shape up in record time

Obviously that's first. But I always find it irksome when someone says "solution A won't work, the problem is caused by issue B".

You're not saying why A won't work and you're not proposing a solution to B. You're simply saying two unrelated things. Yeah our public schools are under and improperly funded and also poor kids have shitty families. So what exactly are you getting at?

Education starts at home.

When parents take responsibility for their children and ensure that their kids are doing homework, going to class, etc, things begin to fall in place. Simply throwing more money at the schools as a solution is a complete farce.

If you don't know where your 15 year old is at 10:00 pm on a school night, then you're not parenting correctly.

Am I missing something? I see so many brand new schools located in the poorest areas of the state with all the latest technology. So what exactly is the problem then? The parents....sorry parent.

Again, that's great but it's not a solution. You're simply describing a situation where there isn't a problem. That's walking up to NOLA the day after Katrina and saying "everything would be fine without this water", it's not an answer just an observation.

What about after school programs for kids to spend less time with their shitty families? Or incentives for families to stay together or penalties for not doing so? Or, my preferred solution, a way to get kids out of shitty homes and into orphanages where they can be raised with values.

Single parent homes are actually the root cause of poverty in poor black communities.

Parents need to start taking an active role in their child's education. I don't know how I can explain that solution any clearer. Do we need to have workshops to tell parents how to be parents? It's not rocket science.

Ok, so who is the arbiter that determines that the state can come in a take your child? That is an extremely slippery slope that raises serious personal liberty infringement questions.

When I look at how grossly mismanaged the public school system is in this state, it makes me have little to no faith that the state could properly raise a fricking child.

They get involved when there is imminent harm to the well being of the child, not truancy and bad grades. That would be a massive increase in bureaucracy, state facilities, not to mention a massive increase in the power of the state.

Then let the church do it. Just get the kids out of their hopeless family situation. That or paid vasectomies are the only viable solutions I can see. And even then some hoodrats will still have kids as teenagers because it's a norm.

These parents aren't going to become better because they read your post on tiger droppings, something needs to change.

So then your answer is to do nothing and give public schools less money. Oh and the parents should get better. That's the plan?

No, I said just giving them more money doesn't fix anything.

The parents need to get better and I'm not sure where that guidance needs to come from. I don't have all the answers but I'm saying that until parenting improves, we won't see much improvement in the kids. I can tell you that the only way things will improve is that it has to come from within these affected communities whether that be churches or community org's, etc.

I spent a week last May in and around Salt Lake City. Spent a good deal of time driving and seeing the countryside and the small communities. I know there are problem areas everywhere but one thing I didn't see was just the plain trashiness in open view and litter. Here in LA you can't drive 3-4 blocks without litter filled ditches and gutters. I took the SLC light rail out to the end of the Red Line in East Jesus and didnt see all the crap. Part of the problem is just plain civic pride and personal accountability.

Then again, when some are told it is not their fault so they shouldn't be held responsible, and they can't make it on their own without society doing everything for them, then what kind of populace do you expect.

And we keep practicing this insanity over and over as if it will suddenly change.
